Living With a Roommate
♫ Saturday, October 2nd, 2010Living with another person can be very difficult. Each person has grown up differently and has different ways of living their life. While living with a roommate can be difficult, it does not have to be. Mutual understanding and respect can make it possible for different people to live together while getting along. Respect each other. One of the biggest problems that roommates face is a lack of respect. To effectively get along with a roommate, you must learn to respect each other. Respect personal space and property. If it isn’t yours don’t use it. Don’t go into your roommate’s room or private areas. Don’t expect them to buy your food. Treat their friends and visitors kindly. Learning to understand boundaries and respect personal space will make the relationship much more effective.
Establish ground rules. Effective communication will make any relationship easier. Talk with your roommate. Set rules and guidelines for the home. These rules can include visiting hours, rent policies, use of communal property, and more. Guidelines will help both parties to understand the needs of the other person. Set reasonable rules that both people are willing to respect and then stick with them. If you blatantly violate a rule, don’t be upset when your roommate does the same.
Find ways to perform service. Clean the dishes. Pickup some trash. Make cookies. There are countless ways that you will find to do something nice for your roommate. You will be surprised how much a simple kind act can positively affect a relationship. Go out of your way to find ways to be kind to your roommate. Be reasonable. Every roommate will not be your best friend. In fact, the situation is usually easier when both roommates have separate lives and friends. Understand that you and your roommate will encounter disagreements and disputes. Don’t expect everything to be perfect all of the time.
